2023 | 4:53 | New Media Installation

Step into a multisensory installation where an entire universe unfolds within a single drop of water. Created using video footage of micro-organisms collected from the St. Lawrence River, this immersive dome projection was built in Unreal Engine and brought to life through TouchDesigner. Teeming with movement, these microscopic life forms reflect Anishinaabe understandings of existence—not as fixed or isolated, but as an ongoing, interrelational process known as mnidoo, which encompasses spirit, potential, process, and energy: something always in motion, always becoming. At the heart of the work is water—Niibii—understood in Anishinaabe knowledge as an ancestor and a living multiplicity. The installation invites viewers to reflect on our reciprocal relationship with water and to renew commitments of respect, care, and responsibility.
Cinematography, Projection Mapping, Editing, and Sound Design by Christina Dovolis. Directed by Dolleen Tisawii’ashii Manning and Mary Bunch. Virtual Worldbuilding by Jorge de Oliveira.
This project was supported by Native Women in the Arts, Mitacs, Science to Applications (VISTA), Canada Research Excellence Fund (CREF), the Social Sciences and Humanities Research Council (SSHRC), and the Media Arts Program at York University.
