PUBLIC MONUMENT ENCLOSURES

2025 | Installation

Stewart Iron Works is one of the oldest manufacturing firms in the United States and, at its peak, the world’s largest producer of ornamental iron fencing. The company became renowned for its fences, prison bars, and cemetery gates, supplying ironwork for many of America’s most prominent institutions, including the Panama Canal, the White House entrance gates, and the cell blocks of Alcatraz and Sing Sing.

For Public Monument Enclosures, I adapted Stewart Iron Works’ nineteenth-century ornamental iron designs into laser cut monitor frames. Behind each frame is a live CCTV feed—it’s surprisingly easy to log onto most security cameras connected to the internet. The selected surveillance scenes come from the Rust Belt, a region I spent much of the past year traveling through by Greyhound, and where many of Stewart’s designs were originally manufactured and installed. The work reflects on the industrial decline of the Rust Belt and the slow erosion of its towns, public spaces, and social infrastructure. Public Monument Enclosures considers how we witness cities in both “death and live.”
